Our Church Vision

Fellowship Bible Church is an independent, evangelical, Bible-teaching church of approximately 500 congregants located in southern New Jersey. The church is led by a team of four pastors working alongside six volunteer elders in a non-hierarchical, collaborative ministry model. The leadership is passionate about equipping our church family to make a difference for Christ.  Thus, our vision statement is as follows:

Teaching/Family Life Pastor Ministry Description

This position offers mentorship and expected transition over 2-3 years as our current Teaching Pastor approaches retirement. This role is ideal for a developing teacher with ministry experience who is ready for accelerated growth in biblical teaching and pastoral leadership. The successful candidate will work closely with our Teaching Pastor and pastoral team, initially focusing on small group ministry leadership while developing preaching skills and gradually assuming greater teaching responsibilities.

Responsibilities specific to the Teaching/Family Life Pastor

  • Immediate Responsibilities
    • Lead, manage, and expand the church's existing small group ministry (“Connection Groups”), including recruiting, training, and supporting Connection Group leaders
    • Develop Connection Group curriculum and resources
    • Collaborate with the pastoral team in team teaching and sermon planning meetings
    • Participate in regular preaching rotation
    • Assist with teaching ministries throughout the church
  • Developing Responsibilities (over 2-3 years)
    • Work with the pastoral team to learn preaching calendar planning and direction
    • Gradually assume greater responsibility for sermon content development and worship flow integration
    • Increase preaching frequency as the transition progresses
    • Take on training responsibilities for staff and volunteers on teaching and discipleship topics
    • Eventually assume primary oversight of the church's teaching ministry, maintaining collaborative emphasis with the rest of the pastoral team

Core Areas of Pastoral Responsibility (All FBC pastoral staff)

  • COLLABORATING/PLANNING: Pastors at FBC work as a team to develop the strategy to fulfill the mission, vision, and goals of Fellowship Bible Church.

  • FELLOWSHIP/ASSIMILATION: Pastors at FBC will be at least a member of (if not a leader/facilitator in) a Connection Group.  Every pastor will be a part of welcoming new attendees and pointing them toward ministry and connection at FBC.

  • EQUIPPING: Help develop and oversee a discipleship pathway where people continue to grow in Christ as they worship, walk, and work for Christ.
  • DISCIPLESHIP/COUNSELING: Pastors at FBC must be personally involved in helping people continue to grow in Christ. This includes both proactively pursuing discipleship opportunities and also responding to requests for counseling aid from within the body.
  • TEACHING/PREACHING DEVELOPMENT: Work with the Teaching Pastor and pastoral team to develop preaching skills through mentorship, team teaching, and gradually increasing Sunday morning responsibilities.   
  • PRAYER/PASTORAL CARE: Pastors at FBC must proactively pray for the body of Fellowship Bible, its ministries, and the needs of its members. They must also work to stay informed of the circumstances and needs of the church family and to minister accordingly. This involves, but is not limited to, hospital visits, weddings, funerals, and care calls.
  • SPECIAL PROJECTS/OTHER DUTIES: Pastors at FBC are expected to model servant leadership, flexibility, and willingness to participate in church activities/initiatives that may be outside their normal day-to-day responsibilities.

 

Education, Experience, and Biblical Qualifications

This position requires:

  • Active and growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ, evidenced by action, attitude, and behavior.

  • Qualified to serve as an elder, outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9

  • Previous experience in local church and/or para-church ministry leadership capacity.

  • Possession of a University degree in Bible is required. Extensive ministry experience, in some cases, can be substituted.

  • Demonstrated gifts and passion for teaching, with readiness for development and growth, and a heart for discipleship.

  • Experience in or aptitude for small group ministry and discipleship

  • Strong collaborative spirit and ability to work effectively in a team-based ministry environment

  • A passion for ministry and to see families grow in their faith together. 


  • Effective communication skills (written, verbal and interpersonal).

  • Competency with computer software (Excel, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, etc.), and the capacity to learn new software (Planning Center, Pro Presenter, etc).

An Overview of What the Elders Are Asking of You

  1. Demonstrate submissiveness to the eldership of Fellowship Bible Church in all areas, always striving to uphold the elder council and seeking the success of our church vision. This requires all ministries to serve one another to see the growth of the body as a whole. 
  2. Proactively pray for the body of Fellowship Bible, its ministries, and its members. 

  3. Provide pastoral care and counseling to the flock as needed.
  4. Salaried, full-time pastors are expected to work a minimum average of 40 hours a week (understanding that there are weeks where that average could be higher) between office hours, regular services, and other ministry-related activities.
  5. Be present and/or in communication with office staff during regular office hours (Monday-Thursday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM).  Church responsibilities may require you to be offsite.  All full-time staff are required to attend staff meetings (Tuesdays, 11:00am).
  6. Endorse church endeavors such as Whiteboard classes and Connection Groups, and participate wherever possible.
  7. Serve where needed during Sunday morning services.
  8. Perform weddings, funerals, baptisms, or other special services upon request.

  4. 9 paid holidays, 2 weeks of paid vacation, 1 week of paid sick/personal, and 2 weeks of paid off-site ministry (with approval).
